Emily + James’s Sydney Wedding at Turrella Reserve
Emily and James share a connection that feels steady and ageless. Best friends, lovers, confidantes — the kind of partnership that feels lived-in and deeply known. Photographing their Sydney wedding at Turrella Reserve felt like stepping into something that had existed long before this day.
The morning unfolded in two pockets of Sydney. James prepared for the day at his parents’ home, surrounded by family and lifelong friends. It was grounding and deeply personal — the kind of beginning that sets the tone for everything that follows. Meanwhile, Emily and her wedding party filled an Airbnb in Newtown with music, movement, and anticipation.
Working as a documentary wedding photographer in Sydney, we’re drawn to days that are layered, connected, and grounded in real moments.
A Ceremony Under the Trees at Turrella Reserve, Earlwood
Emily and James chose to hold their ceremony at Turrella Reserve in Earlwood, standing beneath their favourite tree. On a hot and windy Sydney afternoon, its branches stretched wide enough to shade every guest gathered beneath it. It felt intentional. Protective. Almost symbolic.
Turrella Reserve is known for its open green spaces and riverside outlook along the Wolli Creek corridor. It offers couples a natural backdrop without leaving Sydney, combining quiet bushland textures with expansive skies. For a Sydney wedding ceremony, it brings both intimacy and breathing room — something Emily and James embodied effortlessly.
You can often tell who a couple is by the people who surround them. Orbiting these two was a circle of mateship filled with energy and loyalty. Their friends showed up wholeheartedly. Their families stood close. Every vow felt witnessed, not just heard.
Portraits at Gough Whitlam Park & Reception at The Grounds of Alexandria
After the ceremony, we made our way to Gough Whitlam Park for wedding portraits. Known for its wide river views and uninterrupted sightlines toward the city skyline, the park has a calm openness that allows couples to settle into themselves. The Cooks River weaves quietly through the landscape, and when the light softens toward late afternoon, everything feels expansive and unhurried. For wedding portraits in Sydney, it offers scale without distraction.
The celebration continued in The Gardens at The Grounds of Alexandria, one of Sydney’s most recognisable reception venues. The Grounds is known for its layered greenery, textured brick walls, and warm, ambient lighting that transforms as evening falls. The Garden Bar in particular carries a lush, intimate energy — equal parts urban and botanical. It invites conversation, movement, and long dinners that stretch effortlessly into dancing.
As the night went on, the energy settled into something deeper. There’s something grounded about the two of them. Nothing performative. Nothing forced. Just a real sense of choosing each other, again and again.
Watching them head off at the end of the night felt quietly significant. Not dramatic — just meaningful. The kind of wedding that lingers because of who they are, not what was staged around them.
