At 13, I discovered my first Prince album and decided I was going to form my own band and rule the world.
But my quest for global musical domination wasn’t without its challenges.
I picked up a guitar but couldn’t play a single chord. I tried the piano, only to find my hands couldn’t play different keys at the same time. Then I gave drums a shot—turns out, I couldn’t keep rhythm. I even enrolled in a singing class, but after one session, my teacher refunded my money and told me not to come back. Thanks, Ron.
At 18, I fell in love with hip hop. I wrote my own rhymes and produced beats, inspired by socially conscious artists like Guru, Chuck D, Rakim, and KRS-1. I even owned a collection of Hammer pants (not the polka dot ones). But after years of hustle, I woke up one morning to a hard truth: I suck as a musician.
I was crushed. I felt like the Incredible Hulk—doomed to wander the earth alone and angry, forever—until a camera was placed in my hands. Since then, I haven’t looked back.
